What is a wiki?

A wiki is a quik and easy way to deliver information. This page that you are looking at is a wiki. It's better than a web site because it is easily edited. Not only are wikis user-friendly, but many are free!

Examples of Classroom Wikis

In other words...

As an educator, how or why would I use a wiki?

(from http://pbwiki.com/edu.wiki)
  • You're tired of waiting for IT to help set you up.
  • You want to increase student engagement using a safe online wiki.
  • You're tired of complicated solutions that nobody uses.
  • You want a no-hassle way to showcase your students' work online.
  • You want to eliminate excuses of lost homework.
  • You want a central place for your group to collaborate.
  • You want one place to put your files so you can access them anywhere.
  • You want a partner to share best practices on collaboration.
  • You want your students to take ownership of their learning.
Here are three great ways to use a wiki and engage students in your online classroom. • Have students use the wiki to track background research for term papers, and you will gain insight into the project at the beginning. • Use the wiki to post lecture notes and handouts to keep your class organized. • Ask your students to post exam questions and respond to questions from their peers. Use these questions in your exam.

Three more great ways to use a wiki
Here are three inventive ways real PBwiki teachers are getting their students involved online.
Collaborative homework - Assign groups and have students collaborate by answering a specific set of questions.
Book Review - Have each student to review a book and comment on each others page.
Google Maps - Embed a google map and map historical landmarks by empire or time period.
